FEMA Strategic Planning Summit


The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) mission is to lead America to prepare for, prevent, respond to and recover from disasters. A major part of accomplishing their mission is mitigation, which involves identifying the hazards that have happened or could happen in an area and planning for the unique actions for each.

We helped FEMA bring together 100 employees who represented a cross-section of the Mitigation and Insurance Division to talk about implementing a focused vision and mission. They discussed the strategies that would need to be undertaken to achieve their goals of strengthening relationships, enhancing their credibility and fostering sustainability.

Over two days, the participants gathered in different small group configurations to brainstorm and then prioritize solutions for short-term results as well as identify longer-term culture changes they’d need to make to realize their goals.


Alignment and clarity around key issues and next steps in bringing the vision and mission into reality. Cohesiveness among staff who attended and a foundation for engaging the remaining division staff members in implementing the goals.
